it's gotta be weird if you aren't into football at all but follow people who do. you're just minding your own business, enjoying yourself on social media, and all of a sudden everybody says DOINK at the same time and doesn't bother to explain why

It was an 8am class; he would sit sit on the radiator, open the adjacent window and chain smoke. We were almost always hungover in class, so the smell of smoke while we were barely awake made us feel like puking. The good ole days!
You're just a language pioneer, applying "do" to a "to-be" action ("people who do 'are in to football'"), next year everyone will do be talking that way
It certainly is interesting. I'm not like... INTO football, I have a passing interest and yeah once in a while it's like "Oh shit, did something funny happen last night, what is happening?"
But if someone explains "doink" to people who don't follow football, they won't understand the explanation anyway.
"The ball hit the upright (?) and it bounced the right way for the Commanders (?) So they got 3 points (?) to break the tie and won as the clock ran out.(?)"
Does that help?
actually, that's pretty much my entire social media existence: whenever anyone references 85% of current pop culture happenings and/or news events — multiple ineffably similar posts with zero explanation as to why 😅
Count me as one. 25 years living and I’ve never heard of a DOINK. My girlfriend told me an hour ago what it is before I saw it on here and now I’ve heard about DOINKS more in the past hour than I have in the past quarter century.
People will post something like, “The eagles are slaughtering the lions,” and I’ll be like, “Whoah, that’s crazy!” and then I’ll realize … oh. Not actual eagles or lions.
i don't even follow people who do. I swear i closed the app for 3 seconds earlier this morning and then when i came back my discover feed was just covered in sport ball
I don't follow soccer (as we call it) but many friends do and I've been in Mexico when everyone was glued to a TV screen watching a game. I've never heard any of them say 'doink.' What does it mean?
I’m not into football (more a rugby fan) , I wondered if this was a Premier League/La Liga/Bundesliga thing until I realised it was American football .
hello Jon, if you’re ever planning on doing a history of the Detroit lions series, could you please let me know personally , i thoroughly enjoyed the productions you and Alex made of the Vikings, mariners, falcons, and Dave steib. Thanks for your hard work
Especially as a non-American following a lot of Americans. It's a lot of names that I sort of understand are probably nicknames for teams, but I'm not sure until they post a little more and add some clearer sports terms like "playoffs" and "halftime".
Honestly I’m new to football (for reasons too complex to explain in a reply) and the number of things I’ve learned that are just *underwhelming* is more astonishing than anything I’ve learned lol
To be fair, it causes the goalposts to make a CLANK-THRUM sound like a huge tuning fork (the doink) that is easily heard on tv. Pretty satisfying sound, honestly
It's also weird to be into football, to be keeping up with football on one of the biggest days in the football calendar, and end up with your feed swamped by devotees of a different sport they also call 'football' despite not being played with feet, or with a ball. 🤷♂️
I follow some football games, but not all of them. Everyone does this!!! Throw in basketball and soccer…I’ve gotten to where if I don’t understand a post, I just keep moving.
"The doink that won the division" was a real thing the announcer said and I burst out laughing, and everybody roasted the Chiefs for being lucky, and then the Commanders did it again last night and I just want to roast the Chiefs-roasters so bad
Also: flipping Commanders have won 5 in a row on the last play. Oh! What a fun, wonderful miracle! Isn't this too cute? And no refs being bribed - gasp!
Note: both my teams have a history of this heart attack BS and being hated/berated by all of sportsball fandom.
I suddenly remembered my ex's grandfather complaining in 1985 that the redskins 'ain't no good no more since they hired that *racist description of a black person*'...I remember being HORRIFIED by that.
Eh, I just respond with GOINK or maybe even OINK and move on. Then later on I just drop a few !!! just to confuse them. They be like WTF he watching? 😜😂
I'm trying to guess what it means. Best I've got from my hockey-fan perspective is a field goal attempt that bounced off the upright or crossbar and came back on the field.
I always say, the great thing about football is that even if you have zero interest in the sport, someone will come along and tell you all about it anyway.
90% of the year I am an insufferable indie musician, but for a few hours every weekend for 4 months out of the year I am an insufferable football guy. I imagine the Venn diagram of my followers doesn’t have much overlap.
Is this kinda like the big SportsCon that seems to happen around this time every year? I see more and more Sport people cosplaying with sport jerseys and stuff. Lots of stickers and flags on vehicles. It really is heartwarming to see them bonding over the Sport.
The worst is when you *are* into sports and follow other people who do [into sports] and everyone tweets “YOUVE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME THIS GAME IS INCREDIBLE!”
And no one says which game everyone but me is watching.
Core stoners also looking at this a lil off until searching for the definition of doink in football on google. Search doink on urban dictionary and you’ll understand the stoners
I have long believed Pro sports are patriarchal propaganda driven. If they get men to focus on silly, pointless games,
they won’t focus on the things that really matter, like policy, politicians or even their own family
It certainly makes the holidays suck. Sure, let's all plop down in front of the TV to watch a supremely boring sport that Americans latched onto for some dumb reason. Wee I'm having so much fun watching the man tackle the other man.
I recognize that I have the minority opinion here, but I have no idea why I'm not allowed to describe a sport I don't like as dumb and boring. It's not a dig at people who like it, it's me saying that I spend half of the "best day of the year" forced into an activity I hate, and it sucks. 🤷♂️
it's gotta be weird if you aren't into pro wrestling at all but follow people who do. you're just minding your own business, enjoying yourself on social media, and all of a sudden everybody says DOINK at the same time and doesn't bother to explain why

(Looks into camera) "This was a great result, and so should you."
Amazing play.
She/He is
They do

Aussies are bewildered bro

Ah yes, Doink.
Doink, indeed
The field of inquiry narrows…
Or
Do. You follow people who do watch football.
“Do” requires another verb after it in the context used.
Either works, but which word you use is dependent upon the next word in the sentence.

He wants a tattoo of the name of a famous play on his arm. I'm not joking.
It's not The Drive. It's something else I don't recall.
(Except that instead of nonsense like 'Doink' they post nonsense like 'Misstiano Penaldo')
The fact that the sports stuff is 90% US-centric makes it trickier for us on this side of the ocean.
An Oblong is a rectangle.
In English at least.
What happens over the pond, not really my business. Yorktown & Bunker Hill kinda saw to that.... 🤷♂️
But - for awareness - if you say 'oblong' an English person will always assume rectangle. 'Oblong' as round just sounds wrong to us 👍
Thanks.
I heard my husband say it last night from another room and then forgot to ask.
“That umpire was rubbish”
“If Bernard does not improve by next weekend he must be dropped”
“Robbie fades in the closing 50 metres”
Similarly, talking about “the open”. The open what?
Context free outbursts consigning their originators to communicate in a narrow inward looking clique
Go Chiefs! Lol
Note: both my teams have a history of this heart attack BS and being hated/berated by all of sportsball fandom.

I did figure out the Doink reference, although not rigjt away
And no one says which game everyone but me is watching.
they won’t focus on the things that really matter, like policy, politicians or even their own family
Way to miss the entire point

I was at the 98’ game where Gary Anderson missed his first field goal in TWO SEASONS
It haunts me
