Was having dinner with some friends who moved here from the Bay Area and was reminded that the Bay Area has this thing where they see themselves in this rivalry with Southern California and there are anti-SoCal advertisements and memes and people in Southern California are totally oblivious
Comments
This is actually hilarious
I always loved how not only Bay Area ppl, but even LA ppl, always viewed the LA area as “Southern California” or “SoCal” but somehow San Diego and San Diego County were never included or thought of as being part of SoCal; San Diego was always out of sight, out of mind. SD […]
😉
NYC instead thinks its rivalry is with London, Paris, Tokyo, etc.
Maybe Bay Area residents can console themselves with the fact that Seattle thinks it is in a rivalry with the Bay Area, but the Bay Area could care less.
I think there’s a lot of pride in Bay Area culture and it’s less a rivalry and more a desire to be seen as distinct.
Just don't care....
we talk constant shit that's masked by the fact that we could never live without each other.
The North remembers.
(Except that Dodgers-Giants rivalry does seem to be a thing.)
Doubt CA cares — or even knows.

I just reply "yeah.. anybody's game", then meander off to find some BBQ & chicken.
I kept it real. Me: "Bring it.. preferably in 8-10 years after Nick retires, that would be great, thx".
/dunno why, thats what they say on Fark

The Giants, who also left NYC for SF in 1958, are not bums.
Facts like this ought to be self-evident.
However, if the Dodgers are playing the Yankees, it's ok to root against the Yankees, just because they're the Yankees.
Southern California’s déclassé trade & tourism pays to keep the lights on so the Bay area gets to feel all posh and above it all.
See what I did there…?
Sorry for the shouting but I just love my hometown despite all its flaws, y’all, and Fort Worth is my hometown

;-)
Say this to someone from. Fort Worth: what do you mean we aren't the same! Reeeeeeeeee!
We Yankees don't generally think about them unless Florida Man makes the news
My only grudge against NorCal is ``hella``, an absolutely execrable instance of bottom-tier slang.
And, of course, NYC and wherever.
L.A. people: SF is dope. I love visiting.
*shakes angry fist impotently*
Pretty sure Bay Area folks think they’re better, more refined, whatever.
Seriously, whatever, LA & SF have far more in common than MAGA anywhere.
Wake me up when there's good tacos in the Bay Area.
(I kid, I kid. I lived in the Bay Area for 20 years, and I only moved to SoCal 2 years ago.)
"Boston? That's north of here, right?"
That's the dumbest thing I've seen in a while, Bob.
You might want to work on that theory some.
But a family member is from a smaller city in same province as Toronto, and he says the feeling towards Toronto is the same ("they don't know we exist") 🙂
Never knew about this at all. Lol.
Unrequited? Sure.
Unknown? Even more accurate.
Though, tech bros have ruined much of what NorCal used to be. And I’ve grown to love some smaller SoCal towns and the ppl that live there. But fuck the Kings and the Dodgers all the GD way…
Same things bristle parts of the south land from the coast to the inland empire.
South Bay, north bay and east bay have similar gripes.
Don’t even get Sacramento started
They think they’re under attack by “city people,” but in reality those city people never think about them at all.
Flyover country seems to not be self-aware of where the top state economies come from vs gov spend goes to in their political affiliations and support.
And they are not angry at Michigan, or looking down on Michigan, or imposing their will on Michigan, or really giving a single thought to the state of Michigan, good, bad or otherwise.

1) rural areas
2) major cities in flyover country
3) the premier cities, like US Top 10
Maybe a tier 1.5 if you want to parse the NYC's from the San Diego's. (i.e. top 5-10 from top 20)

In fact, if they think of it at all, pretty much everyone I know cringes at the thought of Idaho life.
I just never think about Idaho, good, bad or otherwise.
I'm just busy minding my own business and contributing to my family and community.
I’d say that the 90s marked the beginning of Idaho’s descent from conservatism into utter madness.
But they usually forget the part where their taxes will go up, and lose most their state level benefits…
Btw Tom I read The Atlantic--your voice through this hellscape is much appreciated.
From black helicopters to the exercise in Texas to Q-Anon
license plates I remember my old truck breaking down and a trucker picking me up. He was on his way to Montana to bring a load of potatoes to Idaho and offered to buy the parts I needed and return me to my stranded truck. Great road trip.
In Missouri Kansas City is obsessed with St Louis but nobody in STL thinks about KC at all.
*ducks*

Still believing in what was only ever a one-sided rivalry, when we are home to multiple $1T companies, is like the uncool nerds from high school who now run the world but never gave up that underdog self-image.
When I asked how often she went to those, she admitted never. 🤷♂️
(Enjoy your visit with friends!)
(Also, coming from NYC, making fun of CA in general is pretty standard, so, I might not have recognized this was a subset.)
Like one group swimming in the Ocean, sneering at others and then some wave knocks them out.😂
Exhibit A:
I like LA and i have to keep this a secret when in the bay area
I’ve been in the Bay Area over 2 decades and have never witnessed this in any form. Have fam in SoCal (LA/SB) that have never mentioned a thing.
It’s similar to the chip on its shoulder Boston has about NYC while NYC is like Mariah Carey “I don’t know her” levels of detached.
Haven't been to the Bay Area in a while, but if they were there any times I've been there, I was oblivious even then 🤔
But once, when I was on the Beaudry Trail, I bumped into someone from SF who said they had better hills than we do 🤨
