its funny how the clash are thought of as THE PUNK ROCK BAND 😎 when their post-punk/new wave stuff is infinitely better imo. theyre a good punk band but a amazing post-punk band 🔥
What day of the week? If I need a jolt, Safe European Home. Other days, Straight To Hell. Lost In The Supermarket.
The house where they formed is around the corner from me and hardly anyone knows it. Sid Viscous, Viv Albertine (Slits), Mick Jones, Keith Levene (PiL), in a student squat.
If it is one of those in the query, you probably shouldn’t be answering here.
While I love their cover of Police and Thieves, gotta go with Clash City Rockers for pure punk energy which I’m feeling the need for right now. I could change my mind tomorrow.
Of the commonly mentioned i concur with Guns of Brixton and (White Man) In Hammersmith, which are great, but two I’ve not seen here (probably because I think they were only on the UK release), are Deny and Protex Blue, which are also outstanding. Also, The Magnificent Seven.
The ice age is comin',
the sun's zoomin' in
Engines stop runnin',
the wheat is growin' thin
A nuclear error,
but I have no fear
'Cause London is drownin' and I, I live by the river
As the smoke of our hopes rose high from the field
My eyes played tricks through the moon and the trees
I slept as I dreamt, I saw the army rise
A voice began to call, "Stand 'til you fall"
The tune was an old rebel one
Lost in the supermarket and death or glory. The first because the feeling of loneliness perfectly conveyed. The second because the line “he who fucks nuns will later join the church” a hilarious way to say watch how you’re being influenced by the stories you tell yourself.
I will be the only person who says The Card Cheat but its both an unforgettable melody and a genuinely brilliant piece of writing that turns regular gambling into a metaphor for every choice anyone ever makes, just trying to keep another step ahead of dying
Top five, off the top of my head:
1. The Card Cheat
2. White Man in Hammersmith Palais
3. Death or Glory
4. Safe European Home
5. The Magnificent Seven
1. London Calling
2. Should I Stay or Should I Go?

6. Clampdown
7. This Is Radio Clash
