oh god I'm doing it, it's happening, I'm deleting my entire Twitter archive because I just don't trust that malevolent clown with it, fuck it really feels like the end of an era

Yep. I’m not anyone important so I’ve been manually deleting everything. Posts; replies; likes; photos. Everything. It’s cathartic and I still have all the photos. I thought it might be melancholy, nah. I’ve always flown under the radar.
I just downloaded that horrible app and made like three posts but it’s nothing but extremist garbage there. I’ve spent more time blocking people than I have even successfully doom scrolling. Horrid.
There are a couple of dozen people I will miss if/when I leave Twitter, who don't seem to have accounts elsewhere. They're not people i know IRL so I suppose it doesn't matter (least of all to them!) but I feel a bit sad about it.
I don’t think so, although there are plenty of people happy to charge to do it for you. First thing to do is to request a download file of your tweets, which takes 24 hours. Settings and privacy > Your account > Download an archive of your data
those clowns feed off the attention they get from people they outrage. that cummings has to come here to clip stuff to keep his grievance machine going tells a story. twitter dies when musk took over. why stay there and train his AI with your content and actions?
I know how this feels I did it a year ago and I made so many friends there in a dark time in my life. I left as soon as that megalomaniac bought it and let it go to hell. Truly sending love as it is a huge thing when you pull that plug.
I've just deleted mine. Been wanting to for ages but always weakened at the last minute. Did it while yesterday's result is still ringing in my disbelieving ears 😳🙈
I appreciate your good intentions but believe you are mistaken. I have never seen a platform business achieve a valuation on the basis of inactive, rather than active users
The exodus from X is good, very good, but it is a microscopically small compensation for what has just happened. Its breaking my heart to read posts from women in USA at the moment💙
This seems like a good place to ask: is it important to download all my old tweets? They are mostly screaming into the void and bullshitting around about politics and health care. I don’t think I need them, but realize I might be missing some reason.
I did it manually yesterday. Was kind of like looking back through a yearbook. I typically just read stuff and retweeted a bit. Only needed about an hour.
Well done Marie!
You will not be sorry to kill off X.
It IS the end of an era.
Brace yourself for the start of another one. At least you can control what happens here, but we should all be careful of the self-delusion of the "echo chamber".
(FG : a big fan of yours)
I think so. I deleted when he accused UK gov of riots. People who are still on there say they can’t contact/see me anymore. I feel so much better and this is like old Twitter.
FYI for people asking I've used https://tweetdelete.net, costs a one-off seven dollars but happy to pay that given the scale of the service - do have to download your archive first via Twitter though, which usually takes circa 24 hours
I've got to do this. I've been putting it off and not posting since the day he bought it but I have zero excuses and just need to shut up shop.
The shock of Wednesday morning has receded a little, and now I'm scared. There are too many huge egos with fuck-tons of cash involved in this disaster.
Redact is a free alternative that works well. (You have to pay for it to delete your content from other sites, but Twitter is free.) It took about 3 hours to delete all my tweets, back them up locally, and unlike my likes.
I am tempted to lodge something with their DPO and exercise article 8 of GDPR which is your right to be forgotten. it seems extreme but so is the cunt that owns it.
There are ways to get your twitter archive on here. The protocol supports it in a way which will not spam your followers with all your old shit, in their feeds.
“Because the import will repost all your tweets at once, only use this method if you don't have followers—otherwise, you'll be spamming them. This tool also doesn't preserve replies, so conversations may be confusing once imported.”
Consider recreating your account over there in thirty days, but only having your name and handle there with no content. That'll keep people from scalping it for impersonation or whatever.
my (illogical) nightmare scenario is one day he just decides to make all DMs public, leading to everyone everywhere having to resign from their jobs and the beginning of WW3. a service that archives & deletes those? now we're talking. I'm not really arsed about archiving my actual tweets.
Have exactly the same worry, but not sure deleting fixes it - they will still exist - on a backup somewhere; and in the DMs of the person you were having the conversation with. Think we were all very naive to have the conversations we did via that medium.
Once you've downloaded your history, how many clouds is it on and do we know which God owns which?
I have a few embarrassingly inept election forecasts I'm ashamed to own but I think I'll just DEL the app and leave my twitter grave open so excited gammons can cackle and drool over my rotting corpse.
Also, you don’t want someone else picking up your username and pretending to be you. That’s my reason for not deleting my account and my exposure is way less than yours.
same. I am struggling with it. Over on twitter I spent years developing a following for my streaming and interactive content. All the friends I made, and followers,.. Its so hard to let go of that
One comment I read mused that Twitter might get merged with Tr*th Soci*l. The very idea got me off the fence about leaving asap. Glad to find many ppl here and on bsky.
aware you're deluged with replies to this but is this significantly different to downloading your archive + deleting your account? Already on step one of this & considering step 2
I keep circling around the idea. So weird that it was absolutely instrumental in building my career (and many friendships) and now I want nothing to do with it.
Following you is the only reward I have to give for kicking the Musk habit.
Does everyone realize they're keeping Elmo's X floating just by beings there?
I didn’t feel fully in control when I deleted mine. Huge sigh of relief when I surprised myself and clicked deactivate. Felt a bit like a break up I went through.
I haven't deleted mine yet since I still need to migrate my tweets. But I haven't checked Twitter, posted, or reposted anything there since the Orange Disaster—and honestly, it feels amazing not to see right-wing nonsense anymore. It really was such a toxic place.
I believe you have 30 days to get it back. I deactivated last night then just reinstated it this morning after reading about deleting your old tweets first.
It seems there are a couple of ways. The OP posted one above I think using a platform called tweetdelete. You have to pay for it, but it’s only $7. Here’s another way that’s free but may require some coding knowledge. https://bsky.app/profile/dominik38.bsky.social/post/3laglmjncdh2v
Also, check your data privacy settings and unselect any of the agreements. Here’s the AI one. I don’t know if this is all an exercise in futility at this point, but it’s worth a shot.
Same here. I deactivated it yesterday. I am feeling out of the loop from trusted sources of what’s going on though politically but I just couldn’t support someone who had a hand in destroying our democracy.
My account is pretty tiny over there (prob too small to scrape but you never know) but I want to keep one tweet as a crumb trail. Planning on deleting the rest though after downloading my archive.
Re not trusting the clown with it: he'd still have your tweets (for AI training or whatever), wouldn't he? They're just not visible to others on Twitter? Or have I misunderstood what deleting tweets accomplishes?
I've just walked away from the site. Left my account and all my tweets still sitting there. I'd like twitter to be like a ghost town in 1950s cowboy films. Evidence of what was once a thriving place but now decaying.
Pressing the "Deactivate account" button was niiiiiice. I do miss parts of twitter (old car enthusiasts, shitposters, etc) but I'm not putting a penny into Elons pocket, and I can sleep better knowing that.
I deleted 1 account yesterday. My main account I pared down & made copies of all the news outlets I followed. Just need to deactivate. I'm not going to bother deleting tweets or moving here. Start fresh. I'm sure he's capable of pulling copies from somewhere. My account was never that big
anyways
Sigh. For the moment I’ve just taken it off my list phone and stopped posting but I might need follow your lead. I really loved my time there, though. Why can’t we have nice things?
In the process as we speak (or whatever we do here? Skeet?) Downloading my archive is taking a long time and really making me question my use of time, but nonetheless! Making the break is in progress!
Please do not start me on it. Been there 17y and 11 months! Earned wrath of family for spending too much time on social media. Will be a relief all around.

Musk is toxic.
Been there.
Cried a little.
So much effort for so little reward...
But we DID make A Difference.
My guess is that content is absolutely still available to x to republish at any time it wants.

And then it occurred to me: is it really gone?

The end result was their swift extermination once everyone realised what secrets they knew.
When the tech (and how to build it) gets leaked, it's easy to see that civilisation will collapse. Not least because "past" includes "a second ago".

At least it exposed elmo as the POS he truly is and not some genius as I've been screaming for years.

We thank you for your service.
(To decency)
anyways
The opportunity has come and gone over months though - it often claims I have no previous tweets or replies 🤷♂️
Doing it with such a big following is a brave and in a very modern way, noble thing to do.
Over the long-run, it’s pragmatic to be principled.
