like i don't even know what to say to this. no this wasn't a fucking seance this wasn't a man forgiving anything this was a fucking shambling corpse puppet show and everyone pretending otherwise will be haunted for eternity
I feel it. What a ... bizarre dumpsterfire of moralic, intellectual and emotional inability.
The type of event that makes you instantly see the rot in every system touching this topic - from 'independent from reality'-journalism over education, justice system down to trauma response in society.
Certainly the idea that it represents any aspect of the victim's personality is hogwash. As to disgusting, I don't find it that way, but I definitely see how some would. IAC, it has absolutely no place in a court of law.
IM FUCJING SORRY WHAT IT WAS HIS SISTER WHO MADE THE VIDEO!?? shut it down shut all of it down i am going to instigate the butlerian jihad actually fucking for real jesus christ
They don't even think, it's faked. It's just repeating words and the order relating those words together to string a coherent sentence together. AI literally fakes intelligence! It's sophisticated fakery, but still fake.
The killer should respond with their own "AI" video of the guy saying he didn't mind getting stabbed at all and doesn't want to press charges since he's no longer really dead
"it's like a slideshow or memorial for an impact statement"
just do that. write a fucking statement. read it. write a poem. say that you feel he would have forgiven his killer i don't care but like this is so fucking ghoulish
"it's my grieving process" then your process is wrong and you should fix yourself. i'm not giving this shit an inch it's fucking ghoulish and delusional
The grieving process needs to include regularly asking yourself the question, “If this was the 1850s, would I have been scammed by phony spirit mediums?”
she presumably worked with some company to produce this shit since I'm not aware of any consumer-level free tools that can do something like that, so I'd really like some details on who's charging grieving family members for an e-seance
EXACTLY! Sometimes people, *especially emotionally vulnerable people* need to be told "no!" You're not actually doing anyone a service but empowering them to practice digital necromancy on their dead loved-ones.
I'm honestly not very familiar with the concept of US victim impact statements, but the basic gist of it seems to be 'X person has already been found guilty, now we want to see how much we need to punish them' So it's basically like an open invitation for a very formal form of just revenge
the worst part of this, is that the judge was swayed by the "impact statement" and increased the sentencing from what the prosecutors were asking for- they were asking for 9.5, and he upped it to the maximum.
That judge needs to go take a tech literacy course.
they did a g-d awful AI voice thing in the netflix doc about Gabby Petito to have her journal entries & such read in "her voice" & it made me both sick to my stomach & livid.
...i guess it was effective if the goal was to make her sound as dead possible, but i dont think that was the intent.
This. We do not need to start letting technology hijack our identity after death to write some fantasy for the living. The sister should have spoken for herself.
No, it's their God given American right to necromance up their dead loved one and make them say things that they can't refute and act like it was their actual will. Totally the acts of a sane person.
"Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."
If any of my relatives made a generative AI puppet of my dead father, I'd have to be physically pulled off them because I would be sinking my teeth into their neck with full intent to kill for insulting his memory and life with an abomination that's trying to commodify the human soul.
It's just so, SO fucking grim that anyone at all thought "yeah, let's do this" and they actually went through with it. How the fuck does anyone think this is an ethically acceptable thing to do?!?!
Imagine somebody killed your loved ones and the government goes ‘good news! We forced a computer to read everything he ever wrote and did online- now you can talk to it!’
fucking insane. witch trial level shit. thought it was a joke people thought there were ghosts in the shell?
it was supposed to be that a ghost in the shell formed in the transistors when nobody noticed. not that people would worship ghosts in the shell that actually dont exist...
People in societies upended by devastating pandemics often turn to cargo cults to cope. For Western US Natives it was Ghost Dance, for us its resurgent Trumpism and AI
Kids know that Mortal Kombat isn't real. They know that Spongebob isn't real. Adults are the ones who can't tell the difference between reality and a bunch of made-up bullshit
In case anyone's wondering: The video voices the words of the victim's sister who says she knew what her brother would have said had he been able to. So rather than delivering her own impact statement, she produced an AI version in which her brother speaks. https://www.npr.org/2025/05/07/g-s1-64640/ai-impact-statement-murder-victim
isabel keane better get something out of this beyond a garden variety paycheck because I’m not sure any amount of promotion is worth what this means for her humanity and soul.
It's sad, depressing, unsettling, confusing, infuriating and just... off........ The melding of the 14 stages of grief and an unholy contract with a cambion... Imagine Mizora bringing back Wylls dad to tell him it's fine
Yeah uhh. If I ever get murdered, don't you dare do that. I will pierce the veil and cuss out everyone involved in that abomination post mortem and continue to haunt them as a vengeful spirit
You respect the way they essentially puppeteered a cadaver to posthumously speak for someone in a way that trivializes the death of the person who became said cadaver?
I will haunt ANYONE who does this to me. Because A, I’m a grudge-holding witch, and no, I don’t forgive you for killing me. And B, I’ll haunt every one of you bastards. And not in cute flowing white—your walls will be made of blood and it will fuck up all your couches so there.
Ugh. I hate it here. We could be using this technology to make the world better, and we’re using it to make murderers feel better about killing. *flips table*
It’s desecration of the memory and life of the deceased, and that’s not limited to one religion. Most human societies and even some animal like elephants have death rituals to honor and respect the deceased. It’s a perversion of nature to commit an act against a person’s legacy like this.
I think the problem is that the existence of “Clark Tech” is viewpoint dependent.
As the separation between educated and lay increases, so does the portion of the population that accept tech they don’t understand as “magic” that has no tangible limits.
If it's civil, then this might be okay as a "day in the life" video which is often used to show non-economic damages.. If it's scripted, I can see this as being just illustrative of the sister's testimony of what the victim would say.
But fun fact, my mom practiced in Arizona for a couple decades, and one time a judge allowed a medium to perform a seance on the stand, so who knows what's going on here.
Google “Robodebt” for the Australian government program that delivered multiple suicides on the basis of a computer deciding they had maybe been overpaid welfare
One of Black Mirror's most acclaimed episodes, S2E1 "Be Right Back" (2013), explains (very tenderly) why we shouldn't use media-scalping AI to speak on the behalf of actual past persons.
We are just one step away from "we trawled through your facebook posts and the algorithm says it's probable you would consent to this dubious experiment or sign this legal document so we went ahead and assumed you did."
The judge even liked it ffs. But gave him 10 years in jail lmao
“To Gabriel Horcasitas, the man who shot me, it is a shame we encountered each other that day in those circumstances,” an AI-generated version of Pelkey says in the clip. “In another life, we probably could’ve been friends.”
And now, any use of video is instantly considered questionable. Video, which used to be definite proof, can now simply be tossed as "AI." This is terrible.
Hey, if you respond to the bit, stay with the premise.
"when they did that, it at least showed exactly how fucked up it was"
But twelve people who couldn't get out of jury duty might very well believe the ventriloquism trick. And, unfortunately, maybe the AI one. (it's the same trick)
Thank fuck my sister doesn't really use AI because I feel like she would do that and she does NOT know me well enough to know what I would say. What I would say btw is at least 30 minutes of yelling in very strong language about how much I hate AI and how much I hate everyone involved in this
It’s so obvious that it’s just these fucking boomers just now discovering AI and playing with what they think is all this cool shit high tech. This is a disgusting desecration of the dead.
Better start adding to your living wills and advanced directives: don't use my likeness for this shit. You don't get to speak for me just cause I'm dead
I need details: is this something he wrote on his deathbed and since he passed away they used a simulacrum to deliver it or is it a "Who the fuck knows where this came from, who submitted this to the court in the first place?"
it was the victim's sister just writing a script for this ghoulish abomination
> The 37-year-old Army combat veteran’s family created the AI statement using a previously recorded video, a picture and a script written by the victim’s sister, Stacey Wales.
AND ONE MORE THING - What fucking gets me is some time last month someone wrote their own statement and had an AI read it - their own words, but they have difficulty with public speaking - and the judge RIPPED HIS SHIT and THAT was uncalled for, comparatively speaking
How dumb are these people. Ai is not the same as a living person's testimony, especially a victim!
The AI could have been programed to say the forgiveness!
It was programmed to forgive the defendant. In the Der Spiegel article someone else posted is the video itself. It was such a vile desecration of the victim’s memory, I cried.
Everyone involved in this needs to be slapped with wet ham. AI necromancy is a fucking despicable way to mock someone's memory. No set of training data can know the totality of a person or hope to recreate them
There are cultures around the planet that both used to and still believe that if you film them or take their photograph you are in effect stealing their soul. Now due to the "wonders" of technology this has become increasingly true.
This feels like gaslighting. I was in a car accident with a drunk driver who had 15 convictions. He committed suicide & left his alcoholic wife to deal with the lawsuit. At the discovery process my lawyer asked me to offer her sympathy. I said no. I lost my car & today still suffer from the injuries
It's harsh when we have to make a life decision not to offer sympathy, but I was alone and lost my car in the process. I still suffer from the after effects 25 yrs later.
My AI would be like “fuck you cunt, I want you injected with cancer cells and denied treatment while a Biopsey of RFKs brain worms are shoved up your nostrils, have a blessed day
AI is a data grinder. Its handler pours data in, AI chews it up, and regurgitates it in something almost recognizable. That isn’t human. That isn’t humane. That isn’t humanity.
So often victims are forced to "forgive" , making them the villains if they don't. This is such a violation. People already have their wishes ignored when it comes to their death, now they can rewrite the narrative when you can't object.
It gets worse
"the U.S. Judicial Conference Advisory Committee said it would regulate the introduction of AI-generated evidence at trial to ensure such evidence would be subjected to the same reliability standards as expert witnesses, Reuters reported."
so what was even the point of this
were they trying to make the guy feel remorse? if he didnt feel remorse before i dont think making a puppet say you’re forgiven is gonna make him feel remorse here
This is so deeply distressing in a visceral, primal level. Both that it happened at all and then especially how it was framed in that article. Fuck everyone involved.
Read an article about this from the Guardian and it seems like the victim's family generated it as part of their impact statement. It's an absolutely ghoulish thing to see and probably the least healthy form of grieving possible. This is the type of shit villains in Sci-fi and movies try to do.
So few remember the era of AI does not have the authority to pull the trigger but we can ask AI if it thinks we should pull the trigger and roll with it.
The family had the chance to do the funniest thing ever and have the AI video just be like "BALLS BALLS BALLS POOP POOP BALLS PENIS" on the stand and they completely dropped it.
I find this no less outrageous than any other victim impact statement. The fact that people loved (or didn't love) the victim of a crime is not a reasonable basis to determine punishment. I'd support victim impact statements AFTER sentencing only.
We actually do *not* need to puppeteer the dead in order to affirm that reckless driving and hitting people with your vehicle are bad things! This is not at all prerequisite to mitigating crash deaths! We could do this zero times and create a better world regardless!
Grief process is unique, but it's a far cry from saying you imagine the victim would forgive because that's what they believed & creating a fake video to "speak for" anyone--let alone the dead who can't correct the record. Seems disrespectful to the dead but certainly is inappropriate for court.
I meant the killer’s. I assume he was convicted. And while it might not be grounds to demand a retrial, I just don’t see how our court system can allow this kind of absurd theater.
But if you accept the video at face value, its exhonerative of the killer's conduct because it depicts the victim forgiving him. So as a defense lawyer there's no incentive to object to it because it works in the accused favor. It's still reprehensible I'm just saying why the lawyer wouldn't object.
Ah. Interesting point I hadn’t considered. I was thinking more in general terms of having an AI talking head giving a “victim impact statement” when it is not the victim, just a tasteless digital simulacrum. Bringing something so thoroughly imaginary into a court setting just strikes me as …bad.
This is super scary.
The people behind this could make "him" say anything they want. If that's then accepted as anything remotely official in court, they can basically get whatever outcome they want...
Can we outlaw stupidity yet? We already have so many other laws that regulate so called free speech, and we were doing fine when we paid attention to those.
What about the reverse? "Your Honor, it's true we have no hard evidence that Mr Smith murdered that CEO but we fed his vital statistics into AI and his likeness admitted guilt. Case closed!"

wonder how she’s gonna feel in retrospect because thats something you cant take back
just do that. write a fucking statement. read it. write a poem. say that you feel he would have forgiven his killer i don't care but like this is so fucking ghoulish
Hell, AI defendents can just admit to the crimes. Imagine how much money and time will be saved! /s
Even if you think you know your sibling better than you know yourself...no, you don't. You don't know what they would say. They're fucking dead.
I'd be repulsed even if this were from the Onion.
Peak main character syndrome.
That judge needs to go take a tech literacy course.
THEN THEY AREN'T HIS WORDS?????
...i guess it was effective if the goal was to make her sound as dead possible, but i dont think that was the intent.
So if the goal of the impact statement was to reduce the sentence it sure as fuck failed!
The sister pointed out that her brother "believed in forgiveness", which I suppose makes him a good Christian and his death even more tragic.
She did *not* ask the judge to forgive his killer or even for leniency in sentencing.
I'll haunt this motherfucker for eternity.

I'll sell my soul to whatever demon allows me the ability to possess and overwrite any AI fabrication of myself.
Lastly when I'm eventually murdered, I'm personally dragging my killer's soul to Hell.
How long until transphobic parents start using this to make their dead kids agree with them? Actual paralyzing nightmare.
It's sad, depressing, unsettling, confusing, infuriating and just... off........ The melding of the 14 stages of grief and an unholy contract with a cambion... Imagine Mizora bringing back Wylls dad to tell him it's fine
In my untimely demise, just play this gif
the blowup doll i named after the person i killed said it's all good man, no hard feelings
NO!!!

Fallout: Oligarchy sux.
If so, it’s completely bonkers fiction fantasy in a courtroom. It’s not real.
That is so much more disgusting and wrong than I had imagined. What the fuck is wrong with people!?

THEY AREN'T FUCKING REAL!
Pure imagination, just like the ai video
It’s a complicated book 😅 I do recommend it tho ~ especially if you pursue the sorcery gig
