Our lead, Blockchain Capital, shares our view that tech should serve people, not the reverse, and their extensive experience with dev communities is helpful as we invest in the ATmosphere.
This does not change the fact that the Bluesky app and @atproto.com do not use blockchains or cryptocurrency.

You flashbang us with that, then expect us to be able to read any of the rest of this?
Gross, you guys.
Crypto pays the bills now. They'll eventually have demands.
I have a hard time believing Blockchain Capital is doing this only out of altruism. At some point, the company paying the bills will demand enshittification.
It seems that when everyone was hoping to cash in on the gold rush, they went looking for the company selling the shovels.
Let's hope that "shovels not mines" mentality keeps up.
Bluesky will always be free to use — we believe that information and conversation should be easily accessible. (We won’t uprank paid accounts.)
• Grown Bluesky from 1M people to an open app of 13M+!
• Launched federation, custom feeds, stackable moderation
• Invested in anti-harassment tooling and T&S
• Shipped DMs, GIFs, and video
• And more...

Any plans for support animated GIFs? (Preferably without conversion to some internal lossy format.)

Could we also get the ability to change content warning labels after posting? For such ocasions when we forget to add it when posting
I cant say Im not scared of what could come out of that, even though the team reassured us nothing bad will.
Please take a long pause before you start those conversations.

Then we are peachy~
I’m looking forward to the day when you launch a Bluesky version of Spaces so I can finally leave that fascist cesspool forever. 🙏
Por onde anda o tradutor desse aplicativo?
Infelizmente ainda n tem a tradução integrada no app
Just PLEASE don't start putting actually useful features behind paywalls. I'm tired of how Discord, Twitter and other sites seem to hide actually beneficial for everyone features behind paywalls. certainly don't hide "Edit" features behind paywall at least
🙄
It feels refreshing and fun! 👍
Ps: i'm truly happy that you haven't talked about trending topics, let's forget about it
That is, it would work either like Twitch bits or Patreon subs, rather than having everything going through an intermediate "skycoin" or other blockchain stuff?
#makeBlueSkyBetter
And yes I know .. ex stockbroker/investment banker.
Hereby it would be fine to poison it for AI
To current Twitter users: Don’t stay where you used to Tweet and now you have to Xcrete. There are ‘bluer’ pastures waiting to welcome you if you are kind, considerate and a joyful part of humanity.
#Bluesky #Sky #photography
when i was on the other site, I almost exclusively used tweetdeck and loved it, then "the dipwad" ruined it
Someone could be like
"Like if you love dogs!"
Then, change it to some vile shit.
The text limit for posts I believe could be increased some, and the text limit from alt-text should be removed cause it's needed for lots of detail.
The ability to edit ones post, comment, whatever, has been a thing since the internet's first inception, starting with forums w0 issues. Twitter was first to not have the ability to edit ones post.
The typos, they buuuuuuuuurn me. o_o

even so, loving everything done so far.
They are good already, but without it, it makes it feel like there's something left there.
Right now there are users who feel unsafe using Bluesky due to stalkers and harassers being able to view anything they post. Not being able to make accounts private poses real risks for folks.
below should be animated
Twitter has piqued my curiosity but as a small account there's no value in me paying Elon
Not resizing images would be nice too, please 🙏 🙏 🙏
He joined here the other day. Send him back to X.
I really wanted to get away from Elon Musk and Twitter but no such luck... I'll Check back in a few months.
No bluesky, tenor doesn't count as "Support of GIFs".
Good to know that u guys invest in a anti-harassment
space.🩵
Cause last time i tried to upload a video on here I couldn't upload higher then 50mb i think?
Adding an "I also want this" comment without additional info is bad form, but you can also add 👍 reactions there.
(The rating-ranking isn't a guarantee of priority course.)
thanks for this!
But I guess they’ve already had you in their pockets. I am #480,998! And I always thought we weren’t going to
if people want to pay for the same drama that moved everyone out of the previous place those things shouldn't be brought here.
it's the PTSD from previous experiences 😭
but keep in mind this is a way better alternative to ads and paid promotion like.. other sites
use people's need to show off.
I'm not going to pay for those myself, but I know for a bloody fact that a bunch of nerds and show-offs WILL pay for them pretties.
If you do customizations I’m all in on a subscription.
and instead you're making X-Lite? why? it's so obviously dumb? nobody WANTS This
Instead, they're emulating Musk's big idea. Good luck!
...
This is the reason why i don't like open sources app...
Maybe they will just tell you to use a 3rd party website for bookmarks too
This 13M users can go as quick as they came if they begin doing things like that so quickly and without the app being actually ready yet. And I LOVE Bluesky.
More options are nothing bad.
It’s a fine balancing act which is why most new social media’s never make it but the old ones created at the beginning are still going strong.
Which in turn, gives them more resources to work on it probably... how is that wrong?
The app is not ready yet and people are coming now. I don't think is the moment to talk about this, but I understand this and it's ok for me.
I don't think it is good place for news.
Remember Twitter Blue before Musk took over? Was essentially this; a cheap subscription that gave you editing tweets, longer tweets, ad-free etc.
I actually had that version (not Musks) bc it had good features and was also cheap
Then Musk bought it and ruined it.
"Pay to win" features like getting visibility or having a bluecheck because youre a subscriber is just wrong, and ruins the network for everyone
I really enjoy the policy of doing the opposite of X
1. username - how people refer to it (pfrazee dot com)
2. "verified by" domain (paul dot bsky dot team)
This would solve the problem of "if I leave my org, my username needs to change". It would make the username more durable.
a random guy with a random username being a member of the Bluesky team is the equivalent of Stan Lee’s ‘anyone can wear the mask.’
But maybe have that scar looked at. 😬
I'm somewhat curious if paying users should get higher res videos that they VIEW, not that they upload, because that actually matches the cost model better and it would be kind of sweet
1.) A subscription model that grants viewers the ability to see all content at higher resolution.
2.) A one-time payment posters can make on an individual post in order to increase its quality for all viewers.
I think this gives most people a good option.
I get the cost model aspect, but as someone who was considering getting "X premium" mostly for 1080p video (until I lucked out on the Indonesian Pricing Mistake), I find having the ability to provide higher quality video more useful than seeing random videos in HQ.
But honestly it probably makes a ton of sense, write once + read many actually makes a ton of sense for this pricing.
Twitter blue sucks but at least it made sense to me that the creator invested money for their audience.
Id go with the video quality for the uploader, then other perks to attract other people.
Perhaps make it an account toggle too, because this is really only relevant for certain niches (artists mostly), but is nice for them to have
Like, plenty of people pay for discord simply because they like to use emojis across servers and other such just for fun perks, but that is very different from the concern of accounts who want their product to look its best
I miss "top friends" on Myspace and "9 favorite videos" on YouTube, that stuff would be great for promo in 2024.
I just miss Web 1.0 levels of visual customization, compared to what we have now on 99% of sites which is profile pictures + a banner at most.
They're not here really because constraints of 60-sec limit. I think journos should be able to post longer. They can't pay and compete w/networks. If viewers pay, it works. Still need longer times.
This was my reply and this is true for me. As long as it's profile stuff like Discord and higher, longer video uploads maybe even allow bmp images I'm ok with all those changes. More money more ways you all can develop to make Bluesky better.
I also like their "pay to inflict a post on whoever is online at whatever time your post reaches the head of the queue"
- protocol maintenance fees extracted from large thirdparty services built on ATP
- data brokering/creating advertising profiles
- control over an information choke point if the platform does take off
- and yes, enshittification if the above is a bust
This leads to restructuring (dismantling protections between company shares vs votes), and the company name becoming a product name instead.
I call this the "Cannot Don't-be-Evil" rule.
I'd like to have longer video uploads, sure, but I don't need avatar frames and so on. I'll pay for the things I want to use, don't need any pointless decorations.
You've built a pretty fun place!
Thanks you for taking care of the butterflies (all of us). ~
I always said that I would have on Twitter pre-Elon, but I refused to pay for what he offered. Squeezing your users into pay out of necessity by downgrading your service, rather than extra features is a terrible way to make money.
High quality videos should also be something you should strive to work on; not hide it behind a paywall...
Not everything needs a subscription guys, you're not old Twitter level yet.
I’ll happily support it and am excited for what’s to come!
Sucesso 🦋💙
how are you actually going to deliver on this? Genuinely does not seem trustworthy
I have a lot of content from Twitter that maxed out at their size of 2 min 20 sec.
Being able to match that video length would be incredibly helpful for getting my content over here!
Yea I can get behind this! 💙
just DONT be discord nitro, OR Twitter blue
everyone or no one should have the edit button, and the default file size shouldn't drop 60% to make the paid better.
(and no flashy junk, none.)
Most artists works aren't hurt too much but I know that a lot of people, especially photographers, hate what compression algorithms do to the images they share
A company I can support more than Twitter with my wallet fr
IM LITERALLY BEGGING
$_$
They are like everyone and sucking you in, I run a forum from my own pocket and I trust my members more than anyone here.
They are becoming money driven in my opinion, Musk part two soon.
even with adblock, if there were ads, bluesky would still be selling your info. do you WANT your info to be sold? there's nothing to complain about. free and no ads
Yes ask for donations, but Bluesky saying "we will begin developing a subscription model for features like higher quality video uploads or profile customizations like colors and avatar frames"
Makes me feel it's just the start. 🤷
Everyone knows who I’m talking about.
I'll keep looking at the code if it's as simple as reimplementing Likes on the profile object.
You won't fix the android share button issue and you want money from people? 😂
I will say that I think a subscription model for higher quality video and images is a great idea though, server space is expensive.
I kinda expected this was coming but I didn't want to believe it was coming.
Maybe like an included lifetime subscription for the BlueSky elders.

🧍♀️
They haven't even added something like "we will work in the futute to make it a real bsky feature"
No, they just told me to use 3rd party
The reason why i dislike open sources app is already starting with Bsky
So I need to work on the banner component next.
I love the way the site is going and wouldnt mind the support
Just uh,please dont lock things behind a paywall like a certain site
I wanna support cause I can, not for lock ups
So, funded by users of the service
Ads?
Also, no unfair features like paying for better engagement.
Just. So. Much. Irony.
Also: screw blockchain and crypto. If you ever decide to go that route, most of the people would flee this platform.
And even if they did that, I can just move to my own PDS and not use Bluesky directly.
But the best part of Bluesky is that it’s an Open Source platform that can adopted as a community sees fit, even if we move our data from Bluesky itself, the protocol will continue.
This entire app is part of that 5%. It started as a blockchain app, and today all the data is put on a decentralised consens-based DB, similar to a blockchain. I'd agree I don't want Bluesky though.
Were it not for the fact that you're already reaching critical mass and you're looking like a good bunch, this backer alone would make me run back to Mastodon bloody immediately.
Then I'll just walk away from this argument with the knowledge that I'm not wrong. I many not be RIGHT, but you haven't showed me WHY I'm wrong.
Wtf are you talking about?
my pt is that it's not realistic to believe that a social media network will never exploit our activity for profit.
MastOdon (O. not A.) is the tech behind *one* of the fediverse micro-blogging services. They have donations, they have sponsors, they have a bloody *foundation*. But they're not seeking revenue in the classic sense.
ActivityPub and AT Protocol, the two technologies that power Mastodon and Bluesky, are federated. They have nothing to do with blockchain, and Mastodon explicitly is not seeking angel funding.
My point is that a nonprofit is still subject to the same market pressures as a for-profit org. it's not meaningfully different in terms of user exploitation given nonprof status and a blockchain alternative protocol. But youre right that series A is bad news!
came out of twitter, + "Twitter's blockchain division, newly announced in November 2021, planned to work with the Bluesky initiative. The division head resigned after Elon Musk bought Twitter in late 2022. Staff departures made the team's future remit unclear."???
your lead mayyy want to think about changing their name. no reason
i know this is going to end poorly
Blockchain WILL be applied to this site. It WILL be the reason the site is ruined
That's really not good. Not good AT ALL!! Damn...
I had so much hope in you...
Damn you...
@atproto.com
do NOT use blockchains or cryptocurrency."
Calma cocada... lê devagar
Do you think they get access to DMs?
Or now that Bluesky is in the capital markets, a sockpuppet investor X Financial Inc. buys a controlling interest?
Even paying $10:$1, it would be worth it for anti-competition reasons.
(this is probably just paranoia, but they really should finish E2EE DMs)
The hate for creepto here is intense. As it should be!
💀💀
Hot inflated garbage, thats all it is.
That sounds like Tech Bro Central.
Wtf.
Disappointing to hear the word Blockchain anywhere near you all! Hoping you all stay garbage-free.
blockchain
crypto
AI
or any other scam that the grifters come up with later.
I wouldn't mind paying a small sub to keep the place running.
[NB: There are legitimate reasons to use something like blockchains, but I am skeptical.]
But either way, there are many different applications of the same or similar principles in computer science, and a version control system isn't the same thing as a currency or token supported by a public ledger.
And when a fund invests in "blockchain" we don't assume that they'll be interested in pure dev tools.

Less than 6mo til this place is overrun with crypto nonsense, especially given the Devs are all crypto weirdos or libertarians, exactly the type of people stupid enough to fall for bitcoin and crypto
@atproto.com do not use blockchains or cryptocurrency."
Let it stay that way.
Come on guys...
all it does is damage the planet and act as easy money laundering for criminals -.-
Source (for the board director thing):

still skeptical but we’ll see.
the blockchain association is new and sus for people now just moving over bsky.
>Looks inside
>Blockchain
[I understand that bsky doesnt use crypto, but I still dont like the idea of the platform having anything to do with it]
The energy waste these are responsible for is not tenable. Carbon offsets and other cheap gimmicks don't count.
Please clarify this, this is important
But Proof of Stake block/crypto are not. Rest assured about this.
Their problems are of a different kind, like financial leverage from rich ppl, but not environmental.
This argument is what I heard from people saying "don't worry, we pay for carbon offsets"
this is like getting funded by scientology and being like "don't worry, we aren't scientologists I promise"
There are a lot of artists fleeing from Twitter for that reason, and no pretty butterfly will stop us from move again if fed up again.
99.99% is nonsense and also destructive
Not now, not ever. Let’s not get it twisted.
ATmosphere is a form to call the all apps that are using this protocol
