Which is hilarious because the main argument Quebec independentists have made all these years is that Anglo Canadians are essentially the same as Americans.
Very true but we’re all Canadian in this moment (well maybe not Danielle Smith) and we can get back to bickering against each other when the American threat is squashed.
Truth is people in Quebec like Americans the same as Canadians from other provinces, but they understand that the French language in North America would whither and die if the US took over.
Yeah, and Quebec in general isn't a place that backs down from a fight, seeing them hop on to a Canadian nationalist train is unusual, but here it's in line with their history and values. Plus as much as they argue with Canada, I can't think of a province that'd hate being American as much as them.
They threatened to join the USA in the past but these past few weeks have shown them that their language and culture would mean nothing to the USA & they would be considered a usless appendage only good for putting military bases on & insulting. Quebec city would be the Disneyland of the north
I'm not, I love Quebec, and Québécois, a valuable wonderful part of our nation. I am also very glad that they see the danger from the south and understand that the language and culture would be better served by and in Canada. That understanding wasn't the case previously.
Quebec has never threatened to join the USA. We explicitly pushed back against the idea during the American Independence War, then again during the War of 1812.
Huh, I am old, came to Canada in '69, I remember the FLQ crisis, my husband was erroneously arrested at that time for taking pics of a bridge in Quebec (his hobby was photography and he loved bridges). I remember when there was talk in Quebec about joining the US. But you do you.
When the USA invaded Canada in 1812 to their surprise they found that the people of French background much preferred being Canadian and fought successfully on the Canadian side.
Precedented, in fact. The last time the proto-US pulled this sorta thing, the French and British colonists in Quebec were unified in repelling the obnoxious New Englanders.
To be fair, New England as a whole did not vote for this. We love Canada. At this point most of us would be fine ceded to Canada, rather than the other way around.
The state of Jefferson can go fuck right off to Idaho. Byeee! Then CA, WA and OR can all become the 11th province (we can trial as a territory- we'll be good 😬) known as Cascadia! Maybe we can talk Alaska and Hawaii into joining us? Or they can join up with Greenland. 🤷🏼♂️
American's would not respect that Quebec has a unique and treasured cultural, and would work to make Québécois abandon it. Québécois are smart enough to know what would be next. Canada needs to be united and strong to fight fascist, happy to see that.
The comment was somewhat tongue-in-cheek but separatist/secessionist sentiments amongst a significant proportion of the population are a reality in BC. Source: I'm from PG.
That's amazing - granted things are a good bit different than in the 1970s, when Pierre Trudeau had to declare a state of emergency because the FLQ was violently trying to get Quebec to split from Canada (kidnapping and killing to do it), but this is like Catholics in Belfast jazzed for UK goods.
The US has fucked up so badly that Quebec and Alberta are strangely united in a fighting spirit. Not on my bingo card, to be honest, but I’m loving it. More! Tell that GOP that the electoral map here is turning red and they should continue with exactly what they’re doing, lol
I’m not a naturally optimistic person, but I remain hopeful that this political moment will destroy Smith. I’m prepared to be proven wrong, to learn that russian and american propaganda have such sway there that nothing can help, but until then, I still hope.
I know my history, and when Canada is united like this, it goes poorly for their enemies, and more items get added to the Geneva checklist. Trump and conservatives done fucked up.
We’re 8 weeks into imagining what kind of an insurgency we could be, and it’s seriously frightening. We might never ‘win’, but we could lay waste to this entire continent if it came to that. I only hope americans fix their shit before it gets uglier.
Very few Afghans knew their way around NY or FL like we do. Outside of a bayou, no one knows we’re Canadian unless we tell them. With little more than khakis and a clipboard, we could break what’s left of their country. They just really haven’t thought this through.
The beans, beans, beans, grenade thing always seemed unnecessarily cruel to me, but now that I’m this angry? I think I have a better appreciation of malicious creativity during wartime 🤷
Ha! I’m torn as an Albertan living in the Maritimes. I’ve in the past voiced objection to Quebec’s desire for ‘identity’ but now… I get it. I f*cking get it. I appreciate all my Quebec friends more than ever. Get on board Alberta!
LOL - yeah, now we have an Albertan separatist party that wants to JOIN the USA as the 51st State...(I'm not one, but our Maple MAGA population is bigger than you would know - I can feel it outside of campus, and even in my Conservative neighborhood).
You're not wrong. It's just that there's a long history of both Anglophones and Francophones in Canada doing things that don't make sense when it comes to Quebec. So this has kind of caught us all off-guard a bit. 😁
Alberta will be slower, but this latest PR disaster from Danielle Smith and her 2nd trip to Florida is getting more people pissed than she realizes.
I think she's sucking up for a role in American politics because her days in Canadian politics is coming to an end.
She's turning in an oompaloompa...
There's a half-joke that one of my history professors told during a lecture that Canadian national identity has been "not being the USA" since the War of 1812.
England, probably, 'God save the King' has a verse on 'crushing the rebellious Scots', though this has been 'removed' at some point in history, needless to say the Celts have not forgotten...
Interesting aside, the Dutch anthem has the lines 'I am of German blood' & 'I follow the Spanish king'...
Or even 1776. And part of the reason that Quebec didn't join the American revolution, only 13 years after Britain defeated France and gained its French territory in North America, was that Britain was offering more to protect French language and culture.
1775 was the first American attempt to conquer Canada. Apparently, the argument was "it's poorly defended," after getting the guns from Fort Ticonderoga to push the British out of Boston! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Quebec_(1775)
Thanks. Here's an explanation, beyond the battles and fact that lots of American soldiers had smallpox, that talks about how granting the French rights just before this succeeded in persuading them to stay with Britain. https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/quebec-act
My vague memory from, like, middle school was that part of the Intolerable Acts was, in fact, that Quebec got some special dispensations compared to the other colonies. So it surprises me to learn it might maybe have been a close-run thing that they didn't join in altogether.
Checking back on Wikipedia to refresh my memory, they have a note here that it was coincident and actually, in fact, a coincidence that the punitive laws against Massachusetts (and some of the other colonies, but Boston really was a lightning rod) were passed at the same time as the Quebec act.
He threatened Quebec's existence with 51st nonsense as they would cease to exist after that. All of us have to fight together then about time too. The bloc needs to stop their hate nonsense and start being Canadian.
Yeah, that would be helpful.
Hopefully the penny will drop soon and they’ll remember what their party stands for, and either act accordingly or step aside for those who will.
Quebec really, really hates being part of Canada, to such an extent that they refuse to speak English 265 years after the British cleaned France's clocks at the Plains of Abraham.
But they also really, really, REALLY hate their loud neighbor to the south.
Ok now some of that is coming back to me. I definitely remember the speaking only French part. A friend from up there said they're French-Candians and that he doesn't like them either.
As for hating the US I tihnk most of the world hates us at this point for good reason.
Is that how the world sees us? Jesus... I thought we'd be better known for our joie-de-vivre, great food and festivals.
I don't hate Canada nor do I hate Americans
I do hate the US though, but that's because you let snake oil salesmen run rampant in your government and media.
I call it, self interest, and self preservation. Trump wont give two shits about language laws, code civil, your own immigration, ha! Forget that too! When the chips are down, they know who the better partners are. And glad to have them
Trump already doesn't give a shit about any of that. The only thing that orange baby cares about is his inflated ego. He doesn't give a damn about anyone else.
He's also too stupid to realize he's just a puppet. He gives people what they want just for saying his hair looks nice.
It's a bit more complicated and depends on the year. The bloc's a pro Quebec party, which can mean pro-separation or pro "grab as much power for the province as possible while wanting to be a province", above all they hate people looking down on Quebec. Imo this isn't too surprising, but still funny
Consumer power is our greatest power stronger than our rights to vote, which have been grossly violated but people aren't using it properly, not enough people We need to get consumers on our side because consumers rule the world they just don't know it which is exactly what Is preventing us from win
Ehhh, we were fucked before then but yeah it's a sign that the current sentiment is further away from the US than some objectively terrible people would like
devoted to Quebecois nationalism and the promotion of Quebecois sovereignty. The Bloc was formed by Members of Parliament who defected from the federal Progressive Conservative Party and Liberal Party during the collapse of the Meech Lake Accord.
This is a big deal if they’re pissed lol
I feel like if we were to smuggle the Avs out of the US and return them to their proper home in the North, they'd probably at least send us back with some dope touques.
we don't know. I am not one of the “americans” you group all together like we are the criminals? I have no idea what you are talking about, Canadian friend…
I'll say this again as a Québécois: I voted "yes" in the 1980 and 1995 referendums. But i've worked across Canada and been living in Ontario since 1997. Our culture, language and sense of #québec nation would disappear if we were gobbled up by the #USA. #canada give us a better chance at survival.
Interesting interview of @hbuzzetti.bsky.social by @inklesspw.bsky.social today… among other things, she said that lots of folks in Québec don't seem bothered by the fact that Carney's command of French is the worst of any PM in 40+ years.
As long as he's making an effort and we understand each other, I don't see the problem. Frankly there are more pressing matters than the PM being able to fluently speak joual.
De toute façon, son français est supérieure à la mien.
He’s made an effort. Meanwhile, Trump wants to demote Québec from province to neighbourhood, so priority goes to whomever looks like he/she can prevent that.
Last I check the poll he seem to be ahead even here! I haven’t heard anyone around me talk about his French. People are all about buying Canadians and boycotting going to Maine…
That's how Canada rolls. It's like siblings. Yeah,we get to concoct the worst insults we can imagine and lob then freely but holy hell do NOT try and talk like that about them as an outsider because we will end you.
I was hoping that we Americans could help to unify our allies. I'm happy about the unity. It's unfortunate but understandable that our former allies are unifying against us. I hope we can be friends again later when we get out of rehab.
London, Berlin, Warsaw, and Paris are all coordinated to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty from Moscow and the United States. If you told this to a world war 1 soldier they’d probably commit suicide out of the absurdity of the idea.
Its not hâte but we are really not like the rest of Canada and we have a lot of natural ressources! Québec are différent thinking! I saw much canadian hâte for Québec and quebekers than Québec hate Canada
I have a few buddies in the Montreal area and every time I’ve been to Quebec Canadians have been nothing but beautiful to me open armed bend over backwards to help, just awesome. Except for the customs guy at the border, but I found out that even his coworkers don’t enjoy his antics, long story.
I do actually remember a little bit of this now that you mentioned it. I’ll also add every part of Canada from BC to Quebec, everybody has always been amazing to me. And I look forward to getting back sooner than later!
eh last referendum was in 95. I watched it unfold live on TV. was close, something like 50k votes short. never been on the radar since. the distinct society status allowing them french primacy is one of the big deals keeping them from wanting out.
(and like that little quirk actually maps mostly to french canadians across the country although not only but comparatively it's rarer for everyone else)
I remember when like 20 or 30 years ago the Quebecois were sending congratulations to literally anywhere in the world that was seceding. I don't know if my compatriots know how badly America has fucked up here, but I do.
Seriously though
Never in my entire life did i think that bloc quebecois would ever support a unified canada, but here we are
Also as a volunteer representative American, we would like to apologize to Quebec for forcing them to the nuclear option
My only hope is I keep hearing from enough Canadians that they still love me despite my country's apparent descent into madness. A few have offered refuge. I have spent today obtaining all the steps, in order, I need to complete to get a passport. It can't happen soon enough for me.
I’ve spoken to people from Louisiana who are nervous about the English as the only language thing. If you know history, French-speakers down there were physically punished in schools for speaking French, and many ended up just not teaching it to their kids as a result.
Yeah, if he goes to war with Canada (it won't be an annexing, we won't let it be) he'll have to do that with 10 million Canadians who have French as their first language
He's really not prepared for that. At all. And 10 million angry French Canadians is much bigger than the US army
We certainly have our internal squabbles but when an outside force threatens us, that becomes our #1 priority. We're more united than ever before.

"Buy Canadian" strongly entails "Buy Quebecquois", as Quebec makes up a higher percentage of Canada than it does of the world

Let's get weird!
(wry grin)
The true North, strong and free.
Especially you, Matt.
🎵 Bonjour mes amis (de la resistance) bonjour...
I do feel Alberta is more like Cletus Spuckler, though.
It feels like five years ago but it was mere weeks ago. 😑
To Russia? Forever.
Never
This is our country and we’re keeping it
I don’t think our military has fought in a place with winter in 80 years.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Things got really WEIRD...:P
Look at what happened to French-descendent culture in the United States, it's now just a small minority that's quickly dying in one state
If Canada gets integrated, Québéc would likely face the same fate, so they'd rather be French in Canada than a Yankee in the US
Like, better with the devil that at least lets you exist than the Devil who'll eventually integrate you
I think she's sucking up for a role in American politics because her days in Canadian politics is coming to an end.
She's turning in an oompaloompa...
The sexual predator has divided the nation with his lies, and BOOM, he has united the planet, except Putin, against him.
The women, the men, the DEI, all colors, the poor, US trading partners and their Allies are all now united against the orange faced rapist.
Just sayin'
Can’t find a qc flag emoji
But no one holds a grudge like the Quebecois god love them
We are so fucked & we deserve it
Keep going!! Je me souviens!!

I don't think its common knowledge that, the Quebec of then, and the Quebec of now, are pretty different places
Well I can't blame them for hating us to that extent.
He's also too stupid to realize he's just a puppet. He gives people what they want just for saying his hair looks nice.
This is like Agincourt never happened and the French and English are histories kissing cousins.
A "Quebec first" party, essentially - which means "fuck yeah, go Canada!" right now in the face of American expansionist ideas
It's good, they're really fierce. You do not want to upset them. Nice to have them on board, (said from my spot in western Canada)
This is a big deal if they’re pissed lol
No sane Canadians would accept to work us out without a federal gov... Oooops! Lol
REALLY?
Well, the weaponized plum can say one thing - he's very good at uniting people against him.

Did my government unite the Canadians at large *and* the Quebecois??? Do… Do they realize what a pair of happy fun balls they’ve taunted?
Like they have tried to defect so many times. Every couple of years they try again.
They *HATE* being a part of Canada.
It's the one province in the country where a majority of the population lists a canadian as their ethnic group.
You know you done fucked up
