No we don't. We don't need that. That will 100% just be propaganda by the rich to direct people into thinking technology in the hands of a few can absolutely make things better when historically speaking, the opposite is true.
Does he... not understand why it's called "Black Mirror"? Is his thought process just "White" = "Opposite of Black" and ended the thought there? Like Black = bad, White = good?
I believe those shows were made a couple of decades ago. Unfortunately the behaviour of tech company owners combined with recent experience has destroyed our optimism of two decades ago.
They make a really great point. Maybe something every tech company should spend billions on making endless ads so we can see the possible upsides! Why has no one thought of this?!
one of the reasons they aren't already doing it, is tech companies can't actual find real world examples of how their products help people... because they aren't helpful.
streaming shows often already include the worst type of car product placement, which is like "oh look my backup camera worked"
It was just such a pro science pro intellectual drama show, but in a fun way the way science should be. Its science was portrayed in a way that made you think that anything was possible.
And why do we have so many movies about people being locked up and killed during the third reich? History shouldn't be depressing!!1 Why can't we have a movie where the third reich hugs everybody and makes everybody friendship bracelets?
/s
(and /s once again for the drama queens in the cheap seats)
It strikes me as funny that black mirror title is such a smart and intentional reference to the themes of the show. A black mirror, the moment you see yourself reflected on a screen.
What is a white mirror?
That doesn't mean anything...
A white mirror might be like the blinding beam from a magnifying glass, that a cruel kid turns onto insects and trapped amphibians, to torture them. Painfully white light, no escape.
“Cool technology and how it relates to society”
Literally nothing I’ve seen ai do other than supposedly helping to find better ways to stop cancer has been “cool”
Ngl it makes me uncomfortable how they use white and black like its good and bad the fuck those colors every do to you. Why not green mirror make it environmentally friendly.
I was just messaging my friend about dead internet theory the other day. This has got to be the 10th article or post I’ve seen since. I need to touch grass.
Science fiction requires taking a moral look at the impacts of technologies on humanity and nature. It does work best with some sort of conflict, as every good story does.
I was going to say Eureka! was a positive, upbeat sci-fi, but you're right, he seems to want a commercial.
You have no imagination if you can't think of how a show about the benefits of technology could have conflict. Like for it to show a benefit it inherently has to have a conflict that it resolves.
The poster they made is so weird too like do they not see how funny this is? XD
The original of course creepy but the other one is worse. Just a unintentional depiction of people dependent on technology to give them fake emotions.
An addiction to that high, he's almost telling on himself.
It's almost like "woke" and "optimistic future" actually go together somehow...
Who would ever have considered that doing things for the good of others would be a good thing...
Wow, I can’t believe all the fighting. Can you see the answer is in the middle? Today on Gray Mirror we argue the role of technology in society just is how it is. As an example: a story about an android cop relentlessly hunting down political dissidents and refugees in contract with a sexy gf AI.
I mean... it's called "black mirror" because an iphone screen looks black and you can see your face in it. But for sure we can have optimistic sci fi too - that used to be called "Star Trek".
I love the lack of realization that the term "black mirror" refers to the reflective surface of a screen when it isn't displaying something. "White mirror" doesn't mean "opposite of black mirror"; it doesn't mean anything at all.
And yet everyone understood what he was talking about.
In this case it simply meant "the opposite of this TV show black mirror" jeeze words are tools for sharing ideas, they aren't restricted to what makes literal sense.
I'm not a troll. It sounds like you're suggesting that he wanted poc out as evidence by the white person. I'm saying as a person who's used AI, that if you include the keyword "white" it'll spill to all subjects in the scene, even if you only intended for the button to be white.
Oh I agree he knows. But it does make sense because his goal is engagement farming. He's hooking the commenters by making them feel smart that they thought of star trek.
Yeah… but the name by itself won’t mean anything. You need to know that a show named black mirror exists to understand why this show is named white mirror exists.
Idk, if the name of your show can’t stand up by itself it’s not a very good name 🤷🏾♀️
Would be a bad name, true. I don't think it's literally meant to be the name of the show. It'd be lame and derivitive, and perhaps even infringe on copyright.
Its really just an invite to think of and post "star trek"
I don’t know if you read op’s comment. But they are saying that the name doesn’t mean anything, unlike black mirror that has a meaning, and you came saying it’s understandable when clearly it’s not. 🤷🏾♀️
It's also a play on black mirrors used in traditional witchcraft to predict events, see the future gain insight and even curse people that are seen in the mirrors
yea I am all for giving people optimistic, alternative visions for the future and how tech would be used positively there
but the goofy shit on the post here is like "What if this horrible parasitic system we live in created horrible parasitic tech, but we live happily ever after 🥺"
It would be an infomercial for startups, encased in more ads if you don’t have the premium Netflix subscription. This is what they consider peak media.
dumbassery aside what he's asking for is even better realized through education and science programs, the type of stuff these people hate and claim it's a waste of time and money
CORRECT.
The dead Internet theory is a conspiracy theory that asserts, due to a coordinated and intentional effort, the Internet now consists mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation to control the population and minimize organic human activity.
An optimistic tech future where everyone appears happy but it is a comment on technofascism would be pretty cool. Kind of an Andor meets Stepford Wives thing.
When Internet was young, I told my bright idea to older people of the company I was working in about a web page that had only good news. They were fascinated. (But of course, I was very, very drunk).
White mirror is just black mirror but from the privileged perspective so it looks full of hope. The car screens filter out the homeless people on the median. All your peers genes are designer. The servants are automated and the burgers served in the sewer taste like beef if you believe hard enough.
"A just machine to make big decisions
Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision
We'll be clean when their work is done
We'll be eternally free yes and eternally young"
"Given the popularity of the original work and due to the clamor of fans, an independent studio has published How Cool It's to Build the Torment Nexus, inspired by the work of Don't Create the Torment Nexus. We hope will live up to the original work"
I am honestly terrified at the thought of the mind necessary to not only come up with that tweet, but also decide that sharing it with the world would be a good idea.
Sometimes I worry that I'm not a good writer, and then I remember that people like this who think "What if 'Thing That Exists' but with less of a message and no tension" sometimes publish shit and dumbasses will pay for it.
The dead Internet theory is a conspiracy theory that asserts, due to a coordinated and intentional effort, the Internet now consists mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation to control the population and minimize organic human activity.
I believe Facebook is already going the same direction too. With Ai it is probably so easy to create all kinds of profiles it would be a temptation for those with the power to do it.
In my opinion the US got so good at dystopian dramas that life eventually immitated art and here you are. Star Trek was visionary in that Gene Roddenberry postulated that human beings could be better than they are now. No racism, no sexism, no inter-human conflict. The technology was secondary.
I mean they did also have sexism in TOS, that was a pretty significant thing that happened, like I understand where you're coming from here but they very much did have sexism in TOS.
I haven't been talking about TOS. Kirk was clearly a womaniser, and Roddenberry's attitude to women was questionable too. But he still put women in important working roles on a TV show.
I don't think you need to come up with a complicated explanation for drama tending towards negative stuff - you need some kind of conflict in there, else it's not interesting - that's why "alien invasion" is a much more common story than "alien first contact, and they are wise and helpful".
I think the British have always been a little more tuned toward at dystopia than Americans. Huxley and Orwell, of course, and Black Mirror follows them.
I'd agree. But our literary dystopias serve as a warning rather than a template for society. Plus, the UK was physically bombed by the Nazis. Once that happens to a nation, you never forget.
If I remember correctly, Threads portrayed a post nuclear war scenario. I've not seen it, but it's gotta be the bleakest portrayal of societal collapse.
Worth noting that in Star Trek canon, humanity absolutely had to to through some shit (eugenics wars, nuclear destruction) before we could have fully automated luxury gay space communism.
Luxury gay space communism! I've never seen it as that. I assumed there weren't gay characters in TNG because they didn't need to make an issue about it. Just as they didn't need to make an issue about disabled people, coz Geordie LaForge's sight was better than everyone else's. Maybe read it wrong.
I'd disagree. The Next Generation era Trek has found new life on streaming services, and still has the ability to lift everyone's spirits. Its optimistic and sometimes hilarious immitator 'The Orville' will air its 4th season this year. There IS room for optimistic drama if we choose to make it.
I agree about San Junipero. It’s one of my favorites, but I meant that “White Mirror” is impossible to make. Any mirror of our world would reflect how dystopian tech is, and how oppressive white culture is-
Nosedive is the one where she melts down at a wedding and goes to jail. It has social scores
Ppl don't seem to get that all the problems and awful things that happen on the eps of this show are not the result of technological advancement, but actually they're the result of technology advancement being used by capitalism. Capitalism is the real villain in the end. Like always.
I don't know. The first episode, White Bear, White Christmas, Hated in the Nation. There were a number of episodes not geared around capitalism
And the one's that were ... seems more like they were about the evils of men, using capitalism. It's a tool. The evil comes from the person using it IMHO
I don't disagree, but even those episodes take place in a capitalistic societies and have the undertones of it and all the baggage that they carry. Even then, even if it's not ALL eps, the vast majority of them have capitalism as the main reason behind all the issues that end up happening.
For real, the technology itself in the recent episode "Common People" is neutral if not outright a positive idea but it's pretty clear the reason it becomes horrifying is because capitalism wants to monetize it and doesn't care who gets hurt in the process.
It's probably the most orthodox Black Mirror in a while. It almost feels like the writers got spooked by the reaction to the Red Mirror stuff and decided to play the hits
I thought that episode was genuinely great, the "problem" was that the supernatural stuff doesn't fit in with the sci-fi cyberpunk dystopian tone of the rest of the series. I think/hope it was a backdoor pilot for a "Red Mirror" spin-off series.
It's posts like that one that make it hard for me, as a stubborn eternal optimist, to accept that they aren't created by a parody account. I hate that reality won't let me believe that idiots like that don't exist.
yeah Mike the reason those shows don’t exist is because society has progressed to the point that we’ve realized that all the guys selling “optimistic techno-utopian futures” make actual villains look normal
ah yes. the MEDIUM PLACE. where they have only have 3 channels, one of them is the weather, one doesn't work. there's only cheese to eat. But the sofa is kind of ok.
White Mirror is a ‘90s multi-camera sitcom. Full of hilarious hijinks! In the future! But nothing too serious that would make you sad. Filmed in front of a live studio audience. OK, we punch it up with a laugh track sometimes. (There may be a very special episode, but everything will work out.)
Oddly, the show varied on whether one ever took place. Spock opined both about the 37 million people who died in Earth's third world war, and that Yangs and the Komms had fought the war that "your Earth avoided."
"I wish there was more optimistic sci-fi, I think I'll post about it on a dystopian propaganda platform run by a narcissistic Nazi who is trying to enslave all of mankind in a digital panopticon controlled by him and his technofascist pals!"
Wow... Kretschmann doesn't understand the concept of shows that fall into the same category as "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits". "Black Mirror" is just a collection of stories, dude... if you don't like it, DON'T WATCH IT.
Twilight Zone? Sounds dumb. Give me the Sunshine Zone! "Wow, look at all these books! And I've got time to read them all! Time enough at last!" *sits in a comfy chair and reads*
There's something on the wing! It's...it's giving me the thumbs up as it fixes a minor fault! Now it's making me a cosmopolitan! What a nice wing monster!
an episode of Black mirror called white mirror with an alternate title sequence about how it illegal to say you feel sadness online is like, every other episode of black mirror

Also, I’m pretty sure he’s an AI bro
It was called "Tomorrow's World"
streaming shows often already include the worst type of car product placement, which is like "oh look my backup camera worked"
It was sooooo good.
Then I thought Star Trek, and was like, yeah, I guess them too.
And now look at us

What is a white mirror?

Literally nothing I’ve seen ai do other than supposedly helping to find better ways to stop cancer has been “cool”
No idea what I was thinking about
Just completely dissociated
Thank you 🤣
/s 😆
And then they did it again.
And again.
I was going to say Eureka! was a positive, upbeat sci-fi, but you're right, he seems to want a commercial.
guess it would depend on the production quality
The original of course creepy but the other one is worse. Just a unintentional depiction of people dependent on technology to give them fake emotions.
An addiction to that high, he's almost telling on himself.
Who would ever have considered that doing things for the good of others would be a good thing...
Oh, but all that Sci-Fi is COMMUNIST!
They don't have money and they have a magic machine that can make food for anyone without charging money? IMPOSSIBLE!
In this case it simply meant "the opposite of this TV show black mirror" jeeze words are tools for sharing ideas, they aren't restricted to what makes literal sense.
When we saw that the image swapped out a woman of color for a Lilly-white girl, *then* we know what he really meant.
Idk, if the name of your show can’t stand up by itself it’s not a very good name 🤷🏾♀️
Its really just an invite to think of and post "star trek"
Of course it has no literal meaning, but who cares? No one was claiming it did.
And yet, so very apropos of these cretins.
Black mirror is really clever because it refers to a powered off screen, white mirror is what, a mirror covered in toothpaste?
A mirror covered in cocaine …
but the goofy shit on the post here is like "What if this horrible parasitic system we live in created horrible parasitic tech, but we live happily ever after 🥺"
- ChatGPT, and other such Generative AI, are good and helpful and much better than real writers and artists
- Self-Driving Cars are amazing, so much better than human drivers, and will save the world
- [Insert 3rd piece of Tech Bro Propaganda here]
Tennessee Wall-E
How Can A Mirror See An Object That Is Hidden By A Piece Of Paper?
😆
"Plug back in" "Stay connected". White mirror is the illusion!
MUCH MUCH MORE..
than the NEGATIVES they actually CAUSED by supporting and putting money into the hands of a DEMONIC VESSEL that's Pillaging OUR Nation ❕
Selfish, Idiocy, Carelessness❔
The dead Internet theory is a conspiracy theory that asserts, due to a coordinated and intentional effort, the Internet now consists mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation to control the population and minimize organic human activity.
I tried to make that response as bot like as possible !
Bet the rating for that will be great in Urban markets!
WHY CANT WE HAVE WHITE HOLES MATTER?
"A just machine to make big decisions

We'll be eternally free yes and eternally young"

I am so hoping that's a bot.
But we need real life community to make everything normal again.
Let the internet die. But defibrillate communities.
Please.
I tend to find such dystopias bracing and inspiring but Threads is a hard one.

say it back if ur alive
I need to rewatch Eureka! again.
All amazing
Also, IS. The Orville has not officially ended yet!
a show that has absolutely nothing to say about technology whatsoever.
.......................wait, no!
Reminds me of this!
The future isn't what it used to be.
Well, apparently NOT the tech companies IRL, so that might be your problem right there Mark...
