Our lecturer had a picture of a blonde woman up on a slide and clearly expected us to know who she was, but we're all Gen Z so none of us did. I guessed Princess Diana which was incorrect. It's this photo btw

I remember reading about the one in jamaica, they didn't mention her involvement until close to the end of a long article and it really felt like a curveball
It's nice to know she did something with her life after the infamous tapes. She's one of those people who are famous because they are (or were) famous.
About two years after the tape thing I was in a project meeting with about 7 other men. Somehow that topic came up, I had know idea who or what they were talking up.
Points to me I guess, or studying, a job and 2 under 3s will make you miss some world events.
yeah, Paris Hilton is more than a punchline (though she is also a punchline)
she used the privilege she was born into wisely to be a successful entrepreneur and also has made time to speak out for more vulnerable people who experienced the same abuses she did
Apparently, I need to clarify that a) I do know what she first became famous for, even if it's not much of an accomplishment, and b) we don't need sexist shit about her in the replies. Thanks!
I can't recall her name, but if you are from NYC, this jogs my memory of the Heather Locklear billboard, showing her looking *so sexy in a cut off leotard, a billboard advert for a health club
I know this is a tasteless sex tape joke, but I do genuinely think the Kardashians took a lot of notes from Paris Hilton's rise to fame in order to manufacture their own. (Kim has been friends with Paris forever and was her stylist at one point.)
Yes, her new found cause celebre was 100% her boundless compassion for humankind and not in any way a calculated rebranding
I’m glad some people have benefitted from her project but it’s crazy how the wealthy can do the bare minimum and the public will eagerly whitewash their past (and present)
I read an article about the place, Matt Bevin former Kentucky governor, sent his son. Paris Hilton was just a tiny part of the story but the kids who were rescued were so happy to have her in their corner. I don’t know her motivations, maybe she’s a terrible person, but there are so many haters.
My partner had no recent photo of herself when we'd met, online. She'd included a pix of Paris holding a Trout Mask Replica CD, so I'd thought; heck a 54yr old, that looks like a 25yr old cocaine addict. We had to beg photos our friends took. NO idea who famous people are? Why are they all ORANGE?
She’s actually become pretty amazing, using her clout and $ to fight the good fight against child abuse. Colour me surprised and impressed when I heard.
Why? She's actively fighting, in court, to stop government sanctioned child abuse via the "troubled teen" industry. Despite whatever image people have, she's not the worst person and she's using her name, visibility, and experiences to help end something truly horrific.
a big problem is she pretended to be completely vacuous for a tv show and people have trouble understanding that TV isn't real even when it's calling itself Reality TV
This is double fun , I'm giddy that people don't know who this is, and hopeful that maybe younger people will have some shame and learn about history (albeit history about royal families is less important). No need to learn about the person photographed.
The person in the photograph is extremely cool and has done a great deal of good in the world. Her legislative activism on institutional child abuse is terrific.
Oh, that was from EXCALIBUR! See, I fell into a bit of a rabbit hole around 1968, when she and Judi Dench and Diana Rigg were all in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM….
Here is a 20yo Helen Mirren in 1965, playing Cleopatra
I’m a Millennial and I also don’t recognise this photo so good going me, I’ll take this as a sign of my youthfulness and not just being out of touch or forgetful
She then became a character in a TV show where she played a vacuous version of herself and made more money from that then she inherited. Then she ran some NFT scams and may have been scammed herself. Now she fights against child abuse and no one seems to know or care about that part.
Hey, fair enough not to recognize a "celebrity" from before your time. But the Princess Di guess is hilarious. Not sure you could pick a wrong answer more certain to make people angry than that one.
The main thing my brain REFUSES to forget about her is that fact that she doesn't flush the toilet. She expects her servants to do that for her. I mean it's vile on so many levels.
i was gonna bring this up but didnt want to be one of those 'umm ackkkchuuuullllly' people on a skeet i wasnt sure was a joke skeet or not! tbf, it is totally valid though that she has been a totally shitty person in the past, no arguments from me but does seem to be trying to do better so
At the time it was baffling why but kind of a curiosity that this person was in pop culture, now that's like a whole career category. "People you know about exclusively against your will"
Also with pointing out that Kim Kardashian was first brought to the public eye because she was hanging out with Paris Hilton. Long before her own tape was released.

She's been a leading advocate against institutional child abuse since she revealed that she was abused in various boarding schools during the pandemic
She has also devoted a lot of money to LACMA to acquire art by women

( sorry, I’ll see myself out)

For no good reason, but that's neither here nor there
which is another reference Gen Z almost surely does not know 👵🏻
A recursion! It’s all loops, man!

No, that's fine, most of us were baffled throughout, too.
Thanks for the information.

(Don't stay there by-the-way, it's awfulness is more memorable than the lady in the picture!)
I’m glad some people have benefitted from her project but it’s crazy how the wealthy can do the bare minimum and the public will eagerly whitewash their past (and present)
What?
Is that really what she's doing now?
As Hilton was one of the most vapid no talent celebs around
She elevated another rich vapid family name
Kim Kardashian rode Hilton's fame to insane levels starting as her stylist
Kardashians rose to prominence because their dad was OJ Simpson's lawyer
They never went away after that
That's very important work!
It's good to highlight how SA isn't restricted to lower socioeconomic groups
I'm pleasantly surprised & happy to learn about her efforts!
Her dad being OJs lawyer led to the press following the family, photographing the daughters
They've said in interviews
They liked that new fame & had no intention on letting it go
It's not Hilton per say, but the press attitude toward the rich
Kim Kardashian

Influencers beware.
( Oh, who am I kidding, a lot of my posts contain obscure historical references that predate the above by decades if not centuries ).
Is it really THAT weird to some people that younger people don't recognise celebrities from back when we were little kids, or even not yet born?
Here is a 20yo Helen Mirren in 1965, playing Cleopatra
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Paris, scion of Hilton;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, that's hot!
I’ve mostly avoided stories about her for the last few years.
no idea what happened to her.
Her Dad owns the Hilton hotel chain, so, they're really rich and maybe it's that.
Interesting info about the child abuse activism, I didn't know that.

She is famous for being Paris Hilton.
Actually, yeah...

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/paris-reportedly-scared-of-the-potty/
No one knew Paris had been abused when CBS published this so, everyone laughed b/c she was rich & ‘spoiled’
I’m outa touch.
