Every dad has a favorite battle and never stops talking about it

I have a running theory that all dads can have their personality types inferred by their answer to “what is your favorite war?” It’s like astrology, but for dads
Comments
- Tactics which were prevalent in the Civil War, WW1 and WW2 with "Wars of Attrition" - each side just throwing soldiers into the neat grinder to see who can out last the other
- Over engagement with politics vs strategy & tactics, such as in Viet Nam
The goal was to win the war, not kill troops.
shit
So I guess that’s me then.
Now I want to go around asking my friends (non-dad ones as well) what their favorite battle is.
(I even have one! Not that I talk about it a lot.)
Since you are so rude, let me tell you more about Punic wars.
And the Bay of Pigs.
Wars plural?
Star, probs.
Spotsylvania, aka The Bloody Angle--22 straight hours of carnage in the rain, fighting over some fortified trenches. Mayhem raged atop dead+wounded piled 4-5 deep. A nightmare made real. Battle INCONCLUSIVE. Foreshadowed the horrors of WW1
Stumbled upon mention of it on a book about philosophy! Had to learn more.
After I explained the Schlieffen Plan and "keep the right wing strong," of course.
I'm hoping we start up the Njimegen stuff again, good chance I can get on a team and get a free Greytail flight over. That or a Latvia deployment.
Tobruk, or River Plate.
(Maybe Vimy, but that's -cultural-.)
River Platte is a close second.
Helm's Deep.
But don't get me started on WWII airplanes

Well done, well done indeed
My mom talked a lot about the Battle of Hastings.
Also Helms Deep and Hoth.
Oops, grandad exposed!
A good cover of a song more often sung in the key of 'army'. :D
(it’s the glorious revolution)
World War I, Battle of Saint-Mihiel
I spent a great week camping on the islands, visiting various sites.
In the BC Provincial Gov’t & Port of Vancouver I was lucky to play a small part in supporting J-Pod protections & long term viability.
They’re a real treasure!
I’m also glad we got past ‘54/40 or Fight!’ 😂
Helps that he grew up in that area.
“We’re not going off to fight with you, but if you want to take the easy route to fight them, here’s your free passage. We won’t bother you”.
(vi won, as was only right and proper)
Could it have been Notepad? 😜
If it is, it was my dad’s response when I asked him what was one of the most incredible military victories ever, in, like, 1994. He had gone back to college, in his forties, for degrees in Shakespeare and Roman history.
They underestimated the proficiency of Caesar's engineers, though. Caesar built a double-sided belt around the town...
Though I‘m loving the idea of a students shouting BREMSSTRAHLUNG! at each other across a lab 😂

Captain William Fetterman: "Give me 80 men and I can ride through the whole Sioux nation."
Spoiler alert: Uh, no.
(Made my largely oblivious kids visit the spot, covered by grasshoppers, while I recited the tale. Hubris writ large.)

Look, there's a difference between a battle and a massacre!

perhaps one of them will introduce you to a new battle, and that day you know you have found your new best friend
Yes, Waterloo cemented Wellington's blah blah did you see how dumb the British cavalry were??
Also keeps the Canucks from getting any ideas
Queenston Heights?

And that is what we did
Honoured were our orders
In despite of our foe
*very awkwardly throws horns*
This sounds like "Listen here you little shit" territory...
But that will come after, right now it's time to talk about Agincourt
But doing anything on Twitter now gets people upset.

To write is to sit in judgement on oneself” - Ibsen)
Second place is the Battle of Stamford Bridge, which set the table for Hastings.
It’s the battle of Cannae, hands down
Also...Midway.
Goddammit.
Sugar Loaf Hill.
